I think you need to give some clues as to what you did, and what went
wrong.

    <!-- Do stuff ($anotherValue takes "bits" of $valueA) -->

How did you define $anotherValue and what's it's scope if this is a
local variable to template A then you wouldn't expect it to be available 
in template B.

    <!-- Do stuff ($anotherValue takes "bits" of $valueB) -->

If this is in template B then this is a completely different variable
which just happens to have the same name. If you want it to have the
same value you need to pass it as a parameter in the call-template call.

        <!-- Problem area - can test that $anotherValue has many
        characters in it but template "A" fails the xsl:if -->

fails as in fails to compile (reference to undefined variable) or
compiles but gives run time error, or gives no error but does the wrong
thing.
