yes but you defined the default to be select="ascending" which is the
sequence (most likely empty) of <ascending> elements, that are children
of the document root. This isn't what you meant, use
select="'ascending'"
and indeed it appears to correctly resolve the default value
of $sortBy when needed.
well that is the sequene of id elements so most lilely also (), you want
select="'id'" there as well.
