When I transform the XML to HTML, they just dissappear.
Do you look at the transformation result in a text editor or in a
browser? Because a browser will not render any line breaks as such,
rather it collapses any white space to a space
(http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/struct/text.html#h-9.1). So unless you use
the HTML 'pre' element the browser will not render line breaks in
element content.
