I have 2 fields "Description" and "Longdesc" that I want in cdata as
they contain odd characters. 

are you sure that's what you want? In normal element content =there are
no "odd characters" any unicode character (other than control chars) can
be used, either directly if it is in teh document encoding or by numeric
referenence &#... But in a CDATA section, it is impossible to access any
characters not in the current encoding.
