Can I "reset" an xpath to no use of a namespace?
yes you can use default-xpath-namespace="" on any xsl element or
xsl:default-xpath-namespace="" on any literal result element and within
the scope of that element xpaths will revert to the usual meaning of no
prefix meaning no namespace.
so you can probably replace
<xsl:for-each
select="document('http://diglib.hab.de/mss/10-aug-4f/facsimile.xml')//facsimile">
<xsl:copy-of select="."/>
</xsl:for-each>
by
<xsl:copy-of default-xpath-namespace=""
select="document('http://diglib.hab.de/mss/10-aug-4f/facsimile.xml')//facsimile">
