Here is my output requirement.

Case 1:

<grant-sponsor id="grs1">After collecting</grant-sponsor>
<grant-sponsor id="grs2">After selecting</grant-sponsor>
<grant-number refid="grs1">15 patients</grant-number>
<grant-number refid="grs2">10 patients</grant-number>

Case 2:

<grant-sponsor id="grs1">After collecting</grant-sponsor>
<grant-sponsor id="grs2">After selecting</grant-sponsor>
<grant-number refid="grs2">10 patients</grant-number>

Ganesh

another extension question on this.

<grant-sponsor>After collecting</grant-sponsor>
<grant-sponsor>After selecting</grant-sponsor>
<grant-number>15 patients</grant-number>
<grant-number>10 patients</grant-number>

The refid of grant-number should link to the respective grant-sponsor
one not the first one. If only one grant-sponsor is present then it
should link to the last occurrence of grant-sponsor

It is not clear to me which grant-number elements relates to which
grant-sponsor element.
You might want to show us the output you want to create from the above XML
snippet, then it might become clearer.
