The 'linefeed-treatment="preserve"' is the most likely suspect, assuming
that you have line breaks in your source XML.
It would be easier to tell the cause of the problem if you posted the
actual FO markup (i.e., if you're feeding XML and a stylesheet to XEP,
feed them to a XSLT processor instead and extract from the result). It
would be even better if you could produce a minimal FO document that
illustrates the problem and post that (since it remains possible that an
inherited property value may be part of the problem).
