Saving in OpenDocument format does not help on the processing
pipeline side, but it does help for lists which are structured
as such:
  <text:list>
    <text:list-item/>
    </text:list>

(gone through this many times.) Usually, I find the easiest 
thing to do is open in Open Office and export as XHTML.

Well, it depends on the nature of the project. There are certainly cases
where that throws away far too much information. It's also messy to
incorporate in a batch processing pipeline, though no doubt it 
can be done.
