For the record:
We were running php 5.2.8 under fastcgi. We upgraded to 5.2.11 and this fixed the problem.

It points the finger squarely at libxslt. It also suggests to me that what's failing is the evaluation of key() in the initializer of a global variable. But you'll probably have to find a different forum to get libxslt support.
