Because way back when I first created the below <xsl:text />, it didn’t work
without @disable-output-escaping for some odd reason. So I just left it.

disable-output-escaping="yes"> </xsl:text>. This should work.
A non-breaking space will never be escaped, so why disable escaping on it?
Only special characters like "<" and "&" are escaped.
And the OP said he wanted a space, not a non-breaking space.
