You can use ^i when performing search/replace in InDesign interactively (or by means of scripting), but not when synthesizing documents.

Hmm, is this really in XML?  That document says you can use ^ followed
by i, as I read it. (and you need to use ^^ to get a literal ^ according
to page 1)
