also, the tree can change without changing any node content 
(reordering of the nodes): is the position of the node in the 
tree part of the node identity...?

That was one of the questions Dana was asked. She gave an answer implying
that she considered the parentage of a node to be "part of its identity",
i.e. a node could not be moved to a different parent while remaining "the
same node". I personally think this thinking comes from the implementations
she is familiar with, rather than being anything fundamental.
