Thanks for the good suggestions gents!

The onion approach will solve most of my problem, thanks Ken. It's
modular and non-intrusive. Good principles there! Unfortunately
overriding in general does have negative sides also, but in this case
it looks like the right approach.

Micheal, your approach also looks very promising, but I'm not sure how
to do it. I'll read up on the Internet while I'm waiting for your XSLT
2.0 book (which I ordered a month ago from Amazon!).
