An aside, it's interesting that a procedural programmer may likely feel
"in complete control" with a page of if/then/else or other constructs,

Yes, it's been remarked that XSLT is to procedural programming as, say,
Aikido or Tai chi are to karate (or boxing, the assembly language of
martial arts).
Or, Jedi programming. Use the force. Very rogue.
