[xsl] is () a node or an atomic?

More empty sequence 'fun':

What is the base type of (), is it a node or an atomic, or something else?

I can specify empty-sequence() as the sequence type:

<xs:variable name="foo" select="()" as="empty-sequence()"/>

...but its not mentioned in the type hierarchy:
