Well, you've got rid of all the parameter passing, which is the main
simplification that I mentioned. As for the variables, as I said
earlier, it's mainly a matter if taste. There are rather few occasions
when using a side effect free programming style that you _need_
variables. If you only use them a few times, it's often just as simple
to use the expressions inline, but if you find that it simplifies things
for you then it's OK to use them of course.
