I guess you know about Saxon/C which enables XSLT 2.0 as PHP extension?

Absolutely! I'm doing consulting for a web site that uses PHP for 
transformations and, if I'm not mistaken, that's where the problem lies (they 
aren't using the most recent version of PHP either, so, there you have it).
