Dear Wendell,
Thank you for making me aware of this enlightening and entertaining
paper*! I'm sure I will quote it often, going forward, in conversations
about XML, rules, pedantry, etc.
Gerrit
* The term "paper", which actually refers to an HTML page, is an example
for a change of rules, in this case the rather rigid conventions
regarding conferences and their proceedings, that was agreed upon by all
stakeholders: conference organizers, paper submitters, and readers
alike. All are fine with the fact that there are no on-paper submissions
and no printed proceedings (not even in the paper-imitating PDF format).
However, they continue to call it "paper" which is, taken literally,
wrong. So words can acquire additional, figurative meanings if the
community agrees on it, and we should allow other rules to evolve just
like language does.
P.S.: The rules for loading the dishwasher are non-negotiable.

Without this particular example to hand, I actually wrote about this a

The ethics are not in whether you follow all the rules all the time,
but in how you follow them and to what end(s).
