A limitation with "otherwise" as a construction is that it's still
pairwise.

I find myself using ($a,$b,$c,$default)[1] a fair bit; "the metadata
value should be in $a, but it could be in $b, and there was a period six
years ago where members of team Foo all put it in $c and it was never
corrected...." use case.

Any chance of a first-defined($sequence) function?
