Digressing: the odd thing is that our expectation that curly braces will only
be used in matching pairs is a very recent notion. Go back to pre-computer
typography, and vertical braces were often used singly. Traditionally, braces
grouped things vertically, rather than enclosing things horizontally. It's a
typographical device that we seem to have lost because of the limitations of
our technology.
