The cause for the increase is a trend in rising costs.
It's the same for everyone, even though apples-to-apples
comparisons are tricky. For example, an increasing number of
2nd rank academic conferences essentially charge page fees
for accepted papers (with conference attendance thrown in as
a side benefit). How would people like it if the IETF charged
page fees for I-Ds?
Frankly I don't see any alternative to this increase. It's
noise compared to increases in hotel bills and air fares.
