Right - now I've messed around and got my system in a fit state to experiment,
I've found something odd.
fetchmail 5.8.0 as shipped by SuSE doesn't sort multidrop mail. Naturally, its
a binary distribution, so I can't sensibly debug it.
http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/fetchmail/fetchmail-5.9.0.tar.gz and
http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/fetchmail/fetchmail-5.8.0.tar.gz *do*
sort multidrop mail, as does
http://tuxedo.org/~esr/fetchmail/fetchmail-5.9.0-1.i386.rpm
So it looks like a dodgy version of fetchmail got out in the wild somehow, but
the master versions are fine.
In case anybody cares, the strange SuSE version calls itself version 5.8.0-35
I've temporarily worked around the problem by installing the 5.9.0 package
directly from the tuxedo site.

Bill,
Does you or anyone in the list know where I can get a copy of any
earlier RPM's? If you know that ver 5.3 worked, then that's what I should
get. I don't want the source code, as I'm not skilled in compiling
anything on Linux right now. :-)
Well, I have a copy on my SuSE CDs... Alternatively, try browsing the SuSE
web or ftp servers.
Actually, it was version 5.4.0 on my most recent installation CD - and
reverting to that has fixed the multidrop local user sorting problems.
It's a busy week at work so I won't have time to look at the code for
several days 8-(
