You're right, but that introduced another though presumably tiny problem.
(I think fetchmail's configure step didn't find getopt_long on my system ...)

I am not using "--remote" in my ~/.fetchmailrc,
neither am I explicitely using ETRN nor ODMR.
But it looks as if everything is running through properly.
