Re: [fetchmail]Should fetchmail default to delivering through procmail?

Quoting from Eric S. Raymond's mail on Sun, Sep 30, 2001 at 04:20:29PM -0400:
I'm thinking of changing the logic now so that in single-drop mode
fetchmail always delivers through procmail, if procmail can be found.

Can anyone see any objection to this?

sendmail has more checks than procmail can have.

The access database of sendmail can reject mails based on the from and
to addresses.

Spam filtering can also be done through sendmail. dnsbl feature of
sendmail is one way of doing that.

The recent versions of sendmail (8.10.0 onwards?) can pass the mail
through an extra (socket) filter which can be used to even reject the
mail.

Such checks can be done through procmail also! But, procmail kicks in
only for incoming mails, while the sendmail checks will apply for both
outgoing and incoming mails.

Also, procmail will start only after the whole mail is received.
sendmail can reject the mail while the mail is getting downloaded
because of the above mentioned filter.

So, I do not think that it is a good idea to bypass the SMTP listener
completely as a default even for single-drop mode.
