Read the section on "Resource Limit Control Options" in manpage.

Use "fetchlimit 20" in rc file or "-B 20" on command line to control
mails downloaded from mail server in one connection.

Use "batchlimit 20" in rc file or "-b 20" on command line to control
mails sent to smtp server in one connection.
