[fetchmail] Fetchmail & Demon SDPS in daemon mode

2002-10-29 06:59:41
Hello,
I am connected to Demon Internet via ADSL, which currently provides both
a single user pop3 service, and a multidrop mailbox for all users at the
hostname via sdps/pop3 but not smtp. I have a Smoothwall firewall running
masquerading and proxy services between the ADSL box and my hub, and am
currently using an Acorn RiscPC connected to the hub. I am trying to get a
local smarthost mailserver running using

Debian 3.0
Fetchmail 5.9.11+NTLM+SDPS+SSL+NLS in daemon mode polling every few minutes
Exim
IMAP server

Some email names are the same as local user names, others retained from
the past are longer than standard Unix user names, so are treated as
aliases. The Acorn RiscPC is polling the Demon server for each named user
individually, although not all usernames are in regular use, and important
mail may be sent to any other name (spelling mistake?) and lost. I would
prefer to see any mail not identified as spam which is being rejected.
Debian suggest not runnung Fetchmail as root. I wasted some time trying
to modify and save the example file to /etc/fetchmailrc as in the example
file header, but I have also tried many combinations and permutations of the
configurations suggested in the manual and the FAQ, saved to
/root/.fetchmailrc
The usual messages are Segmentation fault or Parse error. The
configuration which seems most likely to succeed (more is read before the
error message) is the one from the FAQ, but it still fails to start
fetchmail

poll pop3.demon.co.uk proto sdps aka mailstore no dns:
    localdomains my_domain.demon.co.uk
user my_domain is * here keep

I have tried adding some aliases, and changing the details in the third
line, but just ended up with more errors. I have configured Exim to take
my_domain.demon.co.uk as a local address, and set up some aliases in
/etc/aliases, so I hope Exim will accept any output from fetchmail.
