No, unfortunately not. It makes the code too ugly, and fetchmail is
becoming internally grubby enough that adding any more cruft to it is a
serious problem.
My resistance to adding *any* new features is pretty high at this point.
The guy with the fake-IDLE patch got it in because he did a good job of
documenting and wrote an implementation that is very clean and easy to
understand. You can try doing likewise, but I fear POP3 is going to
defeat your efforts to keep the implementation simple and clean.
