The .fetchmailrc below works fine if i invoke fetchmail on the commmand

gracefully on.

Glyn,

Are we to assume, then, that the three years' use has been command line?
With this exact .fetchmailrc file?

However if I invoke it from /etc/ppp/ip-up, then the preconnect call
fails

Is this what you mean by your "fetchmail -d" (what polling interval
are you specifying to fetchmail -d?) in this thread's subject? That
is, invoking fetchmail from ip-up and running fetchmail -d from the
command line, counting on fetchmail's daemon mode's periodic wakening
to bring up the ppp link, activating ip-up, and another call to
fetchmail? Hmmmm... I'm getting more confused as I speculate here.

...fetchmail[3855]: pre-connection command failed with status 65280

That's the sort of error I get when a routing failure prevents my ssh
preconnect from completing. I don't know what popsneaker is, but I'd
suggest invoking it in verbose or debug mode and see what it tells you.

Is it something about fetchmail in daemon mode?

Again, your post isn't clear to me just how you're invoking "daemon mode."
Maybe some clarification will provoke some more helpful answers than
mine. Exactly what is in your ip-up script?

Or something environemental?

See what popsneaker has to say about why it's failing. For purposes of
this exercise, you might find it easier to use a separate log file,
instead of syslog.
