A worthy suggestion, but it doesn't do the job, I'm afraid.
Don't forget the combination of factors here: I have had to enable
timeout 50
since I can't afford to wait very much longer for my local SMTP server to
resolve (since my ISP then gives up in disgust, stops talking to me, and
the POP session is lost).
This therefore means that the attempt to forward the mail fails not with a
550 but with a "smtp listener protocol error". I can post a full -vv log
if that's helpful, but here is what I think is the relevant snippet:
fetchmail: forwarding to localhost
fetchmail: SMTP> MAIL FROM:<ybz160d(_at_)mylittlewebhost(_dot_)com> SIZE=2827
<50 second pause>
fetchmail: smtp listener protocol error
.fetchmail: not flushed
fetchmail: POP3> QUIT
