delimiters are `--' and the trailing one is `----' with all the problems that
may entail...

I consider myself totally non-expert in the area of checksums.  If
nobody else can suggest a good, clean, coherent algorithm, I fear we
will have to punt.

I suggest something like the following.  Admittedly, there is a big-endian
bias here, but so does the Internet.  I'm deliberately using a void* type and
casting the values to unsigned char so we go byte-at-a-time and not worry
about how ints are represented.
