Last year when there was a lot of discussion regarding return receipts
and delivery notifications (the ack stuff), many people indicated that
they were not really that interested in the discussions. This prompted
the establishment of the ietf-ack list, which is here solely to discuss
these issues.
Now that the topic has been brought up, and everyone is once again aware
that the discussion is alive, can we limit the discussion to just the
ietf-ack list?
1. I assume that there's sufficient interest on the ietf-822 list for
discussing the format of notification messages in general, and that this
list/WG is probably the right place to do it.
2. From experience with the previous discussions on the ietf-ack list
and elsewhere, it would seem that there is a lot of interest in defining
a mechanism for requesting read receipts. Since this is a UA matter, and
since 822 defines the UA protocol, this WG might well be the appropriate
place to discuss such things. (Now that MIME is defined.)
3. There appears to be somewhat less interest in defining a mechanism for
requesting delivery reports. Since this is arguably an message transfer
issue, the correct forum to discuss this might be in the smtpext working
group, or perhaps in a separate list. Those who don't see the need for such
a facility need not participate. I for one am perfectly willing to discuss
delivery reports on ietf-ack.
Perhaps the chair would care to rule on which of these topics are
appropriate for discussion within the 822ext working group?
