I checked with the source about his quote on character sets.  He was
mis-quoted.

In terms of the

    "MIME will be popular with Internet users, but I don't think large
     companies want another set of standard backbone electronic-mail
     protocols."

quote, what that person doesn't realize is that the set of standard
backbone e-mail protocols we have today is called RFC-822, not X.400.
