I would suggest just going with the most widely used software
compression algorith, PKZIP from the IBM PC world.  I don't know
exactly what the legal situation is with it but it's incorporated into
zillions of commercial products so any licensing must be reasonable.
It is incorporated in PGP with permission.

PKZIP supports several different compression algorithms.

However, I agree that there are advantages in picking a compression
algorithm that PKZIP can decode.

Much of the success of the Internet can be attributed to the fact that a
great deal of the software used on to implement Internet protocols is
"free".  I therefore have a strong preference for a compression algorithm
that requires no licensing fees at all, and thus can be used in free
software.
