(There is no obvious, single mailing list that is appropriate for this
question, so I'm sending it to several. I think drums is the broadest,
currently-active IETF mailing list for Internet Mail, so I've tailored the
headers to have replies go there, rather than cause multiple, independent
threads for replies. Feel free to respond to me privately, if you wish.)
The IETF does protocols, not (generally) APIs. Nonetheless, they
are important.
My question is about the emergence of standard APIs for
mail-enabled applications. The commercial email world has pursued some
choices, MAPI and CMC most notably. As of now, no APIs are in particularly
common use for Internet Mail. The question is where people believe things
are and, most importantly, where they are likely to go.
