SMTP does have problems over slow links - mostly due to the large number
of round-trips.  PIPELINING helps a lot for those who implement it.

Note however that this is really only significant for short messages -
for long messages the amount of time consumed in DATA (for which the
SMTP overhead is negligible) outweighs any time consumed by EHLO/MAIL/RCPT
round-trips.
