Good point, although I've heard that there's a patent covering the combining
of compression and encryption. What's the story?
Yes. Google says http://www.rsasecurity.com/news/pr/951226.html and the
the novelty of the patent appears to be that if you do compression and
encryption together, you don't need intermediate storage, thereby gaining
performance.
