Is [nameoflist] inserted by a list processor a human-level convention?
If a machine puts it there, I think it's reasonable for another
machine to try to take it out.
The problem is that given a message with such a string in its
Subject field, there is no way to determine whether it was
put there by a machine or by the message's author.
Precisely. And this implies that software should (at most) only put
such a string into the subject field if it is aimed at a human, not
software.
