yes. there's a reason sendmail has the extensive address rewriting facilities that it does - it was written at a time when it was useful to try to cope with lots of relatively simple messaging systems each of which had its own addressing conventions. but I was talking about ARPAnet/Internet mail architecture, not about gateways between mail systems.

gateways have to rewrite things regardless. we just don't see this as much today because Internet mail has been selected (in the Darwanian sense) over other mail systems.
