In many cases those people may want a reliable and verifiable identity. They just don't necessarily want it traceable to a physical person. This could be analogous to a self-signed certificate vs. one from a bonded provider.

I'm not sure which upsets me more: that people are so unwilling to accept
responsibility for their own actions, or that they are so eager to regulate
everyone else's.
