It is true that some MTAs make it extremely difficult to reject invalid
users, or spam or virus messages during SMTP processing, but in the
fullness of time they will be fixed or left behind, and MTAs will be
capable of making accept/reject decisions in real time while the
connecting server waits for the final "." in the data step of the SMTP
dialog.

Most GW AV's act as mail relays.. dealing with it is not a problem.. there is always a queue (unless some emulation etc. starts getting involved).

Unrelated.. why wait for th '.'? Has anyone else noticed how sendmail would die after a certain amount of un-closed connections are made? We've seen this happening a few times in the past few months.
