how about response codes to queries at the wrong grain size that
trigger client retries with fewer (or more) bits to get meaningful
responses?
I don't see how to do that and stay compatible with existing DNS. In
particular, there's no plausible way to add new error codes.
An entirely new convention using both address and length, encoded in
something other than decimal octet expansion might be good too,
I don't see how to do this and make it work with existing caches and
clients. If we design something incompatible, we can do it from
scratch and make it much simpler.
