Have come to the conclusion that and ASCIIZ string is the proper answer
with 00h indicating either none or the end of the matter. This way
it can be 
1) Intelligible
2) If the vendor wants to use a single byte, they can (with reguistration)

Since virtually all complilers include routines to handle ASCIIZ strings,
handling would be easy.

Wasn't that easy.
