Sorry to jump in on a conversation half way through. But I'm a little
worried about the above statement. Is there a compelling issue
of compatibility here? Is that issue enforceable?

The idea is that if a client supports keypair generation, then there
needs to be a consistent format that every client can use.  Otherwise, I
don't think we will have interoperability between arbitrary client/CA
pairs.

To answer your question, I do think there is a compelling issue of
compatibility, and the enforcement is through the use of MUST language
in the spec.

So it appears that you object to my use of the word "use" vs. the
suggestion of the word "support" in my original wording, in order to
accommodate other schemes that are useful in other S/MIME environments.
I think this is reasonable.
