This would be an illegal syntax per the ABNF:

      address-literal = "[" IPv4-address-literal /
                            IPv6-address-literal /
                            General-address-literal "]"

      helo            = "HELO" SP Domain CRLF

      Domain = (sub-domain 1*("." sub-domain)) / address-literal
      sub-domain = Let-dig [Ldh-str]

How do you know it's not a domain? Do you perform a DNS lookup?
