lack of foresight from the telephone regualtor when re-numbering less
than a decade ago - it is reported that 2--30% of calls today are
misdialled...

variable length addresses dont stop you having to renumber

of courser, the DNS hides all this from many applications, in exactly
the same way that NATs dont.
