NBSP is used for this purpose.
My proposal u+FFFE was nonsense, I wanted u+FEFF. The latter
is "zero width nbsp" (aka BOM), did you also mean this beast ?
Yes.
Not a no-op in some cases wrt hyphenation and composition, so
it's probably not what Tom wants.
It's close enough.
