a similar problem exists on aix. if i make inc and slocal setgid to
mail, then they work fine. is it really necessary to make these
programs setgid, or am i missing a configuration option?
Yes it is, at least for inc.
On System V systems mail-handling depends on group "mail":
mailfiles all have group mail (mode 660).
On those systems, /bin/mail is setgid mail, and NOT setuid.
For slocal I'm not sure, but because it can also append mail to
your mailbox file, it's more safe to make it setgid mail too.
B.t.w., inc is automatically made setgid mail, when the configuration
parameter "mailgroup" is set to "mail" in the MH file.
