That would be the format file (e.g. /etc/nmh/scan.default on Debian
systems). See the `-form' option in the `scan' man page.
BTW, the current release of the Emacs front-end MH-E does this
automatically, detecting the number of messages to display in a given
folder. See http://mh-e.sourceforge.net/
