I wonder if somebody could answer two questions for me.
How can I attach a directory (preferably compressed) and, recursively, its
contents to a message?
I'd probably make a compressed tarball of the directory and attach the
tarball as an application/octet-string body part.
How could I have answered this question for myself? Neither "man
mhbuild" nor 'cat /etc/nmh/mhn.defaults' helped.
Check out Jerry's book on MH,

You wouldn't be *the* Norman Shapiro, would you?
