Right. feature based. Finally an opportunity to make myself get
better and hopefully quicker at doing things right. I regret all
the now stale open source patches never submitted because I never
got back to doing them right.
And thanks for noticing the other glitches I had not included
in my submission - I thought I had added memmove.c to COMPAT
but had looked right at dtimep.lex and missed it -- I had
even hand executed that Makefile line while checking for
sources of realloc usage which might be problematic for
SunoS4.1.4. Nice to have an extra pair of eyes :)

Yes, that would be the way to go -- new macros ought to be feature-based,
not platform-based. (Or, as with the realloc issue you mention, the code
should just be written for the lowest common denominator).
